17th October 2019 - Glass Blowing

This workshop offers one to one personal tutelage, in a small group, with Colin Hawkins of Loco Glass, one of New Brewery Arts’ resident makers. During the experience you will learn all about the hotshop where the glass is made, and have a little look around the rest of the studio to get an idea of what it takes to make a piece come to life.

You will start your session by getting comfortable with how the molten glass moves by making a keyring. This item shows you basic colour application and how to manage the glass at high temperatures.

With the keyring mastered you then move on to a paperweight which involves more complicated techniques. You will have to manage and shape the glass in the reheating chamber and then go on to using the tools at the bench, many of which haven’t changed since roman times.

Finally, with these two items successfully achieved you will move on to a blown item of your choice. This final item will incorporate all the skills learnt making the previous pieces plus, potentially, slightly more complicated colour application, manipulation of the material and of course, blowing the glass! A glassblowing workshop at Loco Glass will provide you with a wonderful memory and beautiful physical reminders of your day spent blowing glass with us.
